Drink Driving

Course aims:
To provide attendees with pertinent information on drink driving in order to motivate adjustments in attitude, which will effectively deter attendees from driving after consumption of alcohol, thus deterring reconviction rates.
Course objectives:
- Know the extent to which drink driving contributes to road casualty rates.
- Understand the motivators, which may influence a person to operate a motor vehicle after having consumed alcohol.
- Know the mental and physical effects of alcohol on the ability to process information and physically respond whilst operating a motor vehicle.
- Understand how body alcohol levels below the legal limit will still adversely affect mental processes and physical motor skills.
- Appreciate the differences in the rate at which alcohol is absorbed and dispelled by the body dependant upon metabolism and other physical considerations.
- Fully appreciate the potential long terms consequences of continuing to drive under the influence of alcohol; vehicle crashes, causing the death of another, imprisonment, loss of employment, social consequences.
- Know strategies for resisting the temptation to consume alcohol and drive.
Methodology
The courses will be delivered in a classroom environment using professionally qualified trainers with experience of policing, probation, the court system, adult education techniques, crash investigation and driving psychology. They will use verbal presentations backed up by audio visual aids. Presentation techniques will promote intense interaction with the participants.
General course information
The delivery of each course will be adjusted to facilitate effective completion of the objectives dependant upon the composition of each group.
Regular validation of learning will take place throughout each course in order to ensure appropriate delivery of training.
Visual and audio-visual material will be impactive, thought provoking and designed to hit home with the individual without causing undue distress.
Participants will be advised about driving licence application and insurance issues.
At the conclusion of the course each participant will be invited to sign a pledge not to drive after having consumed alcohol.
